Y2K12.. in review

Y2K12, probably marks a watershed year in my life and ends today, leaving 2K13 that is pregnant with possibilities and good wishes, that one hopes, come true. 2012 marked a year of awakening, for India as a country as we found hiterto silent sections of the populace rise up as one. These, although for a few days, at least gives one hope that the heart still beats and we can still do something for the country. For me, as an individual, 2012 ensured that I add a new country to my list of countries already worked in.. and multiply the experience of cultures that I have had. The year, was an interesting one, with trials and tribulations galore, but tempered with enough happiness and joys to keep you interested (as Ravi Shatri would say!!) The trials were many, both in the personal and professional sphere, more because of too little happening rather than an excess of it. The latter quarter of the year more than compensated for the happening quotient, and there is enough matter for a book of a few volumes! 2013 promises to be an exciting year, in more ways than one and I hope that it leads us closer to our respective goals. And one hope that it does not end as a damp squib!! :D So, with hope in the heart and a renewed spring in the step, we open the doors of 2013, and pray that the 13 is lucky for us! :D HAAAPPPPYYYYY NEWWWWW YEEEEEEAAAAAAAARRRRRR!!!

It is that time of the year... again!!

The end of another year draws near and as the new year dawns, it brings with it renewed hope of better days and possibly, a better life!! So, lets cast a glance at the year gone by and look into the crystal ball to see how the new year might pan out

For India, as a country, the year had successes of individuals and teams but at the same time, the failures of the systems was shocking. Time and again, the systems were manipulated by a group of individuals who were tasked with the responsibility of operating the systems to benefit the common people. We have investigating agencies who seem to operate as extensions of the powers that be. We have ministers who seem keen to maximise the wealth of their own kith and kin rather than working for the people who elected them (Who said that charity begins @ home). Time and again, we saw the nation and its people brutalized, beaten and yet not defeated!!

The year gone by has been quite a roller coaster ride with highs and lows in equal or mebbe, unequal measures!!

Could the year have gone by better - Well, of course yes!! But at the same time, things could have been a lot worse too!! :D So, in that respect, it was good!!

So.. what abt the next year...
For starters, lets try and write more often. Lets try and verbalize better. Lets try and work better. Lets hope to get better work and better @ work!! Lets hope that things get better for India and for all Indians.. And let us hope that the search for the ideal "...." gets resolved!! :D

Y2K9 Preview!!

Even as we ring in the New Year, with renewed hope and vigor, it remains to be seen if the new year indeed fulfills that promise. The world around us is battered both economically as well as socially with the need for a fresh breath of air being the prime necessity, and all one can hope is that the new year is that fresh air...

This new year, seemed all the more lonely and silent, emphasising the need of people around you who can share the joy. Also, the number of questions that abound with no answers in sight seem disconcerting. And with the questions having the possibility of really bad answers, the feeling is all the more bad. I know that the best thing to do would be to trust the Superior Power and believe that He would do what is best for me, but then, to worry is human nature after all!! :)

New Year resolutions ?????

1. Lose weight - One of the most difficult things to lose ;)
2. Work a trifle bit more and be a little more serious about things!!
3. And lastly, Blog more often!! :))

The new year, as usual would decide a lot of things, and hopefully, at the end of it, we should be much more happier than we are currently... That is the hope and prayer for the New Year!!

So here is wishing all of us ... A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!! :)

And May the Force be with all of us!!

Y2K6 in review

A long time since I have blogged, or mebbe that life had become too mundane to log anything of substance.

So why the change???? Well, inspired by my friends to start writing again. So thought that, why not make a resolution to blog regularly... Well here goes for nothin...

Y2K6 would be a red letter year for a lot of things. At least for me, it would always be etched in memory as a year that began with bitterness, and went through a cycle of disappointment to frustration to absolute despair before taking a turn for the better with a semblance of new hope and traces of joy, and as I count down the last few minutes of the year, all that I can do is thank God for his infinite mercies and pray that he continues to shower his blessings on us throughout. There have been numerous occassions in the year when I have felt defeated and totally disappointed, but on each of those occassions I have felt His presence in some way or another which has guided me out. It is said that when one door closes, it just means that another has opened somewhere, and for me too, that has been the case. A lot of doors have been slammed on my face, but all that I could do is wipe the blood off my face and search for the next open door. Thank God for giving me the courage to stand again, after falling down.

In Y2K6, I have sown seeds, which hopefully (fingers crossed) would bear fruits in Y2K7. The first quarter of Y2K7 could decide the direction of my life to a large extent, so hoping and praying for the best!! :-)

To end, I would like to quote a line from Bruce Almighty where God (enacted by Morgan Freeman) tells Bruce (Jim Carrey), "Bruce, do not look up for a miracle. Be the miracle", which finds echos in the Bhagvad Gita too, with Lord Krishna exhorting Arjuna to do one's duty without thinking about the results...

So lets TOAST to a New Yeaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

May God bless us with love, peace and happinessss....

May the Force be with each and every one of us...

HHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPYYYYYYYYY NNNNNEWWWWWWWWWWWWW YEARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...

Old Man Winter Cometh !!

Today morning was one of the most amazing and exhilarating mornings at least of my life !! What began as another mudane Monday morning took a flight to “Cloud Nine” ( Not a reference to “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” ) as soon as we left the urban sprawl of Ock Street and entered Park Lane. We realised that something was amiss, but what, we could not find out. The sky was blue ( as always ), the road, well tarred, there were leaves on the pavement ( what else would you expect in Autumn ) and the grass was… wait a minute !! The grass was white !! So were all the cars around !!. Woww !! We were actually seeing some snow !! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo !! It actually was frost, ( something that gets accumulated in the refrigerator ) !! But, with frost already here, can the snow be far behind !! Ppl were scrubbing away on the car windshields to clear them and all that we could do was watch and walk. The grass and esp the park actually seemed like a white field with a tinge of green !! It was ammmmmaaaaaazzzzzzzziiiiiiinnnnnnngggg !!

If only I had my camera !! My A95 was nestled in its case away at home !! So all I can do is pray for similar conditions tomorrow and ask you to do the same, and voila, you could receive a photo of the “Abingdon Frost on Park Lane !”

Tour de Paris !! - Oct 22 - 23 2005

Travelogue of the Paris soujourn !!

Lets make it formal, for a change.

It is said that the real way to travel in Europe is in trains and buses !!! We decided to follow this theory and decided to make the trip to Paris on the EuroStar, a train that covers the distance from London to Paris in just about 2 hrs and 40 mins !! And the biggest perk in all this was the fact that we would be travelling the famous Channel Tunnel, touted to be one of the greatest marvels of modern engg !! It is said that the digging for the tunnel started from the English and French sides simultaneously and it was a race to the middle !! And inspite of the great distance that needed to be dug, the tunnels were off centered by just 4 inches !! The race to the middle was off course won by the English, but what was created was an engg marvel that very few could remain un-awed by it.

Well, so much for History, so the day dawned and we reached the train stn ( Waterloo Intl ), which I am sure could put many an airport to shame. With much excitement and anticipation and some heart-stopping moments ( caused by 2 our travellers failing to locate their boarding tickets ), we boarded the train, and guuess what, in the most eagarly awaited journey, urs truly, decided that it was time to catch up on some beauty sleep ( afterall we had not slept the prev night ). It was just before we entered the tunnel that I woke up and was at least awake when the train entered the tunnel, not that I could make out much outside the window !! Whatever it is, at least my ears felt the pressure change and I realised that we were well and truly beneath the English Channel !! What followed was the usual journey, broken by a continental breakfast that I bought on board and some good coffee !!

Well, we reached Paris well on time and it was time to take the city by storm, or was there a storm brewing ?? At least the forecast predicted some showers, and a look at the sky seemed to confirm our fears !! All that we could do was pray, and that we did !!

Parisians, like typical Mumbaiites, swear by the train system here, which is divided in Metros ( typically underground in main city ), RER ( travels farther than Metros ), buses and Trams. So getting around is no problem as long u know where you want to go and have a transport map in your hand. Paris, like many cities here, has the concept of day passes which you can use in any mode of transport, any number of times in a day, and they come in terms of days. Also, Paris like London, is divided into zones and some research indicated that the monuments that were of interest were located in Zones 1 and 2 and our hotel was in zone 3. So accordingly, we bought day passes for zones 1-3 for 2 days.

After checking in into the hotel ( which we located with great difficulty due to some map problems ), we decided to hit the road and the rail !! And thus starts our journey...

Day 1 in Paris :

First we decided to pay our obscience to Saint Michaels at Notre Dame. The church is as such an awe inspiring structure with beautifully decorated arches over the doors and an equally impressive interior. There was a book in the church that said that we could write down anything in that book that we wish should happen to our friends. I did plan to pen a few lines first for my friends, then expanded it to fammily and friends and then as a true Hindu who believes in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, decided to wish for the well-being and happiness of the whole world !! We did manage to walk around the church and look at the paintings/frescos and diff artefacts. Although, there was access to the terrace, we did not venture out there !! So it was basically a ground level look at the church !!

A short walk and a train ride later, we arrived at the site of what has come to symbolise Paris and also France to the modern world, ie the Eiffel Tower. Built by Gustavo Eiffel, the tower is a sheer metal structure that stands nearly 300m tall. Eiffel tower is basically divided into 3 stages. There are lifts that take you all the way to the top ( to the great relief of ppl like urs truly ).Well, there are 4 lifts that operate on the 4 pillars till the 2nd level and then there are a group of 4 lifts that operate thru the center of the tower that take you to the top. And the ride to the top is one of the most picturesque. When we went, there was quite a stiff breeze blowing which made holding the camera straight an onerous task. In fact I was gripped by the mortal fear that my baby ( A95 ) would be blown off the top of the Eiffel Tower !! There are various scenes depicted at the tower top and they make an interesting visit. The observation deck also has various cities with the distances marked including a few cities from India !! Mera Bharat Mahaan !!

Next on the agenda was a visit to the 3rd monument that makes Paris, Paris ie the Arc de Triomphe !! It is said that there are 3 things that make Paris, Paris which are the Notre Dame Church, the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. So basically, we were covering the essence of Paris on the first day itself !!! Well, the Arc de Triomphe was constructed by Napolean and also houses a museum dedicated to Napoleanic atrefaacts like swords, tent clothe etc. Arc de Triomphe is also the meeting point for 12 roads, ( wonder what it would be called in Hindi.... baarah raasta !! ). The structure, as such seemed to be a blown up version of India Gate!! But one can actually climb up the pillars right to the top on a spiral stairway !! And, it is quite a climb, enuff to make one feel triumphant when one reaches the top !! But the view from there is apparently amazing !! Apparently because, we had just reached the top, when Lord Varuna, in all his good nature, decided to give me a shower and opened the shower !! We went scurrying for cover into the museum and thus our picnic to the Arc de Triomphe had a damp ending !!

Branching from the Arc de Triomphe is one of the most famous roads in Paris and possibly the whole world, ie Champs de Elysees, ie the way of the Champs. How many times have I seen Lance Armsrong, resplendent in his Yellow Tour de France leader jersey, sipping champagne and riding into the city, and I was walking the road. It was a surreal feeling, enuf to make me feel light headed !! Hang on, is it not my stomach that seems to tell my dumb head that it needs something to chew on too !! We searched high and low on Champs.., but could come up with no decent ( read affordable ) alternative. All that we could do was rue the fact that there was not even a single place where we could get a decent veg dish !! Nothing much that we could do, other than go to our plan B, ir pot noodles that we had stocked up before we came here ! Add hot water and they are ready to eat !! And Yummmmmmmmmmm !! Enuff for the day, I say !

Day 2 :

To compensate for the early start the prev day, we decided to take it lighter on the 2nd day and emerged from the covers only when we were convinced that the Sun was indeed up, on that lazy Sunday. After a heavy breakfast, which incidentally was also to be our lunch, we set forth on our trail again. We actually planned to visit just 2 places, ie MontMarte and Louvres Museum. Ring any bells ?? The Da Vinci Code readers !!!

First we went to the Sacre Coure Basilica. Located on top of a small hillock, the basilica stands out because of its snow white exterior. And set against a clear blue sky, it seemed post card perfect. The Basilica had all the elements that I had talked about earlier, but the most striking aspect was the depiction of Jesus in a mural above the altar. It was all ncompassing and huge and jaw dropping and beautiful !! Also, there were numerous artefacts that were descibed as the Treasures of the Church on display. And to add to all this, there was a person playing the harp too, thus creating a heavenly surrounding !!

We were brought down from heaven to earth pretty quickly, by the smell of coffee and some muffins ( which I managed to avoid ) !! and we did manage to come to our senses, we realised that we, in true Infy spirit were ahead of the real schedule. So we decided to squeeze in an extra place, ie Concorde into the visit plan, and boy were we glad that we did so. It was one of the best places. The main attraction is a monolith stone that was gifted to France by Egypt and it is full of Egyptian inscriptions. Besides there are depictions of how the stone was actually transported and placed at its current location. The Place d la Concorde, as it is called is flanked by Gardens on one side, the Arc de Troimphe on the far side and fountains on either side. It is indeed a sight to behold !!

Finally came the crowning moment of the visit, ie a visit to the Louvres museum, home to the La Jaconda, of in layman's language, the Mona Lisa !! The most striking aspect of the painting is that it seems too ordinary for any casual observer, but the simplicity is striking. One may wonder what is there in it that makes it so special, when there are so many more elaborate painitngs that clamour for our attention, but the most crowds were there in front of the Mona Lisa !! Something that each one needs to reflect on !!

Then it was time to head back the Karmabhoomi, ie London. It was a gr8 trip and one could only reflect on the memories that the trip had left us with !! But my friends were bent on creating more memories for one to think about. They managed to lose their return tickets once again and had to pay 23 euros as ticket charges !!

As far as I am concerned, the foll are what I would take back from this trip

I managed to travel the Channel Tunnel, albeit in a trin, but still !!
I also realised the extent to which ppl go to flut rules. When it had been clearly stated that photography in the church was prohibited, ppl still insist on taking snaps in the hope that they would not be spotted. And this behavior is not confined to any nation or group. It seems universal !!
It also showed the importance of how some thought and preparation could make a trip an enjoyable experiance.
Finally, It left me with a lighter pocket, not because I spent money on the trip, but because I ended up losing my mobile on the trip !!

Until the next post... Cheers and N'joi !!

My Travelogue for Trip to Europe ( Aug 27-31 '05)

Trip to Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne...

Peering into the past is one habit of man that makes man who he is, for it is often said that the past holds the foundation to the present and to some extent, the future too. So here I am, trying desperately hard to recollect the details of the trip that we went on to. I, actually feel like a school boy, trying to pen an essay on “How I spent my holidays”, a feeling that I enjoy and one that I miss quite often. I shall try and write in as much detail as possible from my memory, which I have long stopped trusting !! Well, here goes for nothing...

Pre D-Day :

The day dawned like any Saturday morning, or was it Friday night ? We never really know, when Friday night ends and Saturday begins. Well, whatever, we needed to take the bus for the tour at 6:00 am in the morning from London, a good 45 min drive from Abingdon which meant that we needed to leave our place by around 4:30 am, which meant that we needed to be up by 3:30 am. Now, how the hell can a person sleep at 2:00am and wake up at 3:00 am. Not possible, esp for Kumbakarnas like urs truly. So decided to do the next best thing, ie stay awake the night, for we could always sleep in the bus.

We reached London, without much of a hassle, and that too, well within time. Things looked good, except for the scenery around us. We seemed to have mistakenly landed in a Senior Citizen get-together... No DDLJ kind of company. The only company that seemed available was of our group !! Thus we started out on the journey…

Now for the serious stuff !!

Day 1 : We travelled from London to Utrecht which is in Holland. On the way, we touched Brussels( which did nothing to create an impression on me, other than the waffles, which I managed to avoid with a light stomach but a very heavy heart ). In Brussels, we saw the town center and also a statue called Manneken Pis, which actually has a young boy pissing. Legend has it that the boy used to stand in the verandah of his house and piss on the soldiers passing by, hence the name. Some people also say that, a nobleman lost his son in the Belgian version of Kumbh ka Mela, and when he found him, he was pissing. God knows what the reason is, but this is the story.

From there, we went to a structure called Atomium which had been erected in 1958 to commemorate some convention that was to take place in Brussels. It has been modelled on the Iron atom, ie an Iron atom that has been magnified abt 165 billion times.

After that we checked into our hotel in Utrecht( the scene of many heart breaks for the Indian Hockey team ). We did some roaming around there, before we called it a day !!

Day 2: The day began with a promise to show us what Holland is actually famous for, ie cheese and clogs and also a fishing village. But before all that, we visited the miniature city of Madurodam. The city is made up of models of structures from all over Netherlands, all reduced to 250th of their original size. It is indeed a sight to behold, and I was totally amazed by the beauty and attention to detail of the structures. What was more surprising was that, the have not only built models, but also have working models for the ship yards, and the bridges and they also have a working train and road system model !!

From there we went to the fishing village of Vollendam. Now, why is it called a fishing village, I am yet to figure out, but it was truly beautiful. It had a lot of sun, water and music. In fact when we went there, a band was playing and they were amazingly melodious !! Wow !! A true holiday spot !!

The next stop was the cheese and clog factory, wherein we got the oppurtunity to actually see cheese being made ( Boy, it really stinks ) and also sample some of it ( but tastes pretty good ). Besides cheese, we also saw clogs, which in fact are wooden shoes ( does not refer to chokes in pipes ) being made and also try some of them on. Time well spent indeed !!

Then it was time for the city of canals and bridges, ie Amsterdam. Amsterdam, as u know is famous for the diamonds and also the canals. In fact, it is said that the city is actually built on marshy land, after driving wooden piles into the marsh. We visited the diamond factory, who were kind enough to display some of their wares ( note just display ) and also show us how exactly a diamond is polished. And u know what, the first diamonds were discovered in India !! An interesting piece of info !! :-)

We were then given a cruise round the city in a boat. Those folks actually have an entire traffic system in the waterway, just like the roads. They have signals, No parking signs and also water taxis !! Seems like a parallel waterworld !!

Day 3: This day involved a visit to the Cologne cathedral ( a huuuuuuuuuuuggggge structure ) and a cruise in the Rhine valley.... Nothing really interesting to write abt...

Day 4 : Drive..drive..drive..drive..drive..drive..drive..drive..drive...ferry across English channel..drive..drive..drive..drive..drive..drive...train...bus...taxi...home

Food arrangements through the trip : Well, you would not believe it, but it was the best food in quite sometime. We had the best Indian food available including dal, samosas, kachoris, bhajiyas, and also pav bhaji !! Actually, we had a catering van traveling with us and we used to get hot food from there for lunch and dinner !!
